MB CHAMPIONS — licenses and credits

MB CHAMPIONS (test build) is built on Open Moba (commit 0c0585c) by its authors. Server code: AGPL-3.0-only; client code: MPL-2.0; art and third-party works: the licenses listed below. The complete corresponding source of this build, including our changes, is available here: mb-champions-source-9945f10.tar.gz. "Open Moba" and Ekza names/marks belong to their owners (TRADEMARKS.md in the source).

Licensing map (LICENSING.md)

# Licensing Open Moba

Open Moba is an open-source MOBA and reusable engine project. You may study, modify, redistribute and commercially operate licensed versions, subject to the applicable standard licenses. We want improvements to remain useful to players and developers, including people running independent games and servers.

## License map

| Material | License / scope |
| --- | --- |
| Original source in `server/`, `common/`, `career-store/` and `account-api/` | [AGPL-3.0-only](LICENSES/AGPL-3.0-only.txt) |
| Original source in `client/`, `shared/`, `passport/`, `harness/`, `arena-sync/`; original scripts, mobile scaffolding and configuration elsewhere | [MPL-2.0](LICENSES/MPL-2.0.txt) |
| Original standalone project documentation, including this guide and the mission/contribution/brand policy text | [CC-BY-4.0](LICENSES/CC-BY-4.0.txt) |
| Original Verdant Confluence `.blend`/`.glb` visual assets and rendered stills in `art/verdant-confluence/` and `client/assets/verdant/` | [CC-BY-4.0](LICENSES/CC-BY-4.0.txt) |
| Original Forge Sword, Forge Hammer and Dawn Scepter GLBs in `client/assets/weapons/` and their `assets-src/weapons/handheld-pilot.blend` source | [CC-BY-4.0](client/assets/weapons/LICENSE.md); only these three project-authored props |
| Sprite, presentation2D and world2D art already dedicated to CC0 | Their existing directory `LICENSE.md` declarations; CC0 is preserved |
| Imported models, animations, font and other third-party works | Their own notices; see [ATTRIBUTION.md](ATTRIBUTION.md) and the relevant manifests |
| Dependencies, the separately maintained Ekza SDK, runtime downloads and user-supplied avatars | Their own licenses/permissions; this repository does not grant rights on their authors' behalf |
| Promotional media in `promo/` (trailer, captures, posters) | Footage shows the game and its assets under their own terms above; the ElevenLabs-generated music is not openly licensed. No additional license is granted; see each folder's README |
| Names and logos used as identifiers of the official project | Separate [brand policy](TRADEMARKS.md); no automatic trademark license |

Source/configuration/metadata files in art directories remain MPL-2.0; the visual asset grant does not change their source license. Comments, docstrings and code examples inside source files use the license of their containing source file. Asset-specific notices take precedence over the defaults above. Included third-party excerpts, license texts, standards and notices retain their existing terms. Do not overwrite a specific license notice with a directory default.

For attribution of original documentation, Verdant assets or these three original handheld props, use **Open Moba contributors**, link to https://github.com/o-moba/omoba-bevy, identify CC-BY-4.0 and indicate modifications. Preserve any supplied individual creator credits. This credit does not assert that every generated element is copyrightable in every jurisdiction; licenses grant only rights their licensors hold.

## Why these licenses

AGPL protects reciprocity for the authoritative server. A modified version made available for remote network interaction must prominently offer its users the corresponding source of that version (AGPL section 13). Distributing server binaries also carries source obligations (section 6). The obligation is to provide source under the license, not to send the upstream project a pull request, pay royalties or request permission to compete.

MPL protects the source files of the client and reusable engine components when copies are distributed. Modified covered files, including new files containing covered code, stay under MPL. Separately authored additions may have other licenses. MPL allows different terms for executable distribution while preserving recipients' rights to covered source (sections 3.1–3.3), which suits desktop and mobile distribution. This is not a guarantee of approval by any app store.

The server is **not** offered as `MPL-2.0 OR AGPL-3.0-only`. Online client and server communicate over the protocol. Since 0.31.0 the client also links the AGPL-only `common` combat engine for Offline Practice; that extracted source keeps its AGPL license, and the combined executable must be distributed under the applicable combined-work terms. Existing MPL source-file notices remain in place. Do not copy AGPL-only server code into an MPL client and assume a directory name changes its license. Shared MPL files do not carry an Exhibit B incompatibility notice; MPL section 3.3 allows combining eligible files with AGPL software while meeting the applicable terms. Keep the original MPL notices and make the shared source available accordingly.

These licenses do not require someone to share our mission, prevent an independently written competitor, or guarantee development funding. We express our direction through [MISSION.md](MISSION.md), project decisions and the official service. Those aspirations do not add non-commercial, field-of-use, pay-to-fork or anti-competition restrictions to the licenses.

## Avatars belong to their creators and rights holders

Connecting a wallet, owning a token or using an avatar in a match does not assign copyright to Open Moba or automatically place the model under our code/content licenses. Token ownership alone does not establish the right to copy, adapt or redistribute its associated artwork. Imported content needs an actual license or permission for the intended use; people retain their existing rights.

Player-provided models, private files, account data and runtime downloads are outside the repository's default grants. Any future upload or hosting permission must be stated separately and limited to the service's needs. This document is not consent to upload, publish or license anyone's likeness or avatar.

## Contributing and distributing

See [CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md) for contributions under the applicable license without copyright assignment. See [SOURCE.md](SOURCE.md) for source and notice delivery for binaries and modified servers. A license file or Cargo metadata field alone does not satisfy every distribution obligation.

This policy grants rights in material the project is authorized to license. It cannot cure missing third-party permissions, change a dependency's license, or withdraw valid earlier grants. The standard license texts govern if this explanatory guide differs from them. Before a public distribution, resolve the rights and source obligations of the actual dependency and asset set being shipped.

Asset attribution (ATTRIBUTION.md)

# Asset Attribution

Assets bundled in this repository and their licenses. See [LICENSING.md](LICENSING.md)
for the source/content boundary; existing specific asset notices take precedence.

## UI typography

Inter is bundled unmodified in `client/assets/ui/Inter.ttf` under the SIL Open
Font License 1.1. Copyright 2020 The Inter Project Authors
(https://github.com/rsms/inter). The complete copyright/license notice is in
`client/assets/ui/OFL-Inter.txt`; source URL and SHA-256 are in that directory's
README. The native package includes these files alongside the font.

## Verdant Crown UI (fonts, icons, frames)

Installed from the Omoba UI design handoff into `client/assets/ui/verdant/`
(`manifest.json` there lists every file with its source and licence):

- Fonts, SIL Open Font License 1.1 (no Reserved Font Names; static
instances/subsets keep their names): Cinzel (The Cinzel Project Authors), Inter (The
Inter Project Authors), Barlow Condensed (The Barlow Project Authors), Noto
Serif SC (Google Inc.; subset to the zh-Hans dictionaries). Licence texts:
  `client/assets/ui/verdant/fonts/OFL-*.txt`.
- Icons (`icons/`): game-icons.net icons by Delapouite, Lorc, Sbed and
Zeromancer under CC BY 3.0 (Zeromancer's CC0), and Lucide icons under ISC
(Feather-derived ones MIT). Per-icon credits and the Lucide licence text:
`client/assets/ui/verdant/icons/LICENSES.md`. The game shows the credit
line in Settings: "Icons made by Delapouite, Lorc, Sbed, Zeromancer from
  https://game-icons.net, CC BY 3.0."
- Frames, sprites and menu backgrounds: original Omoba UI art (backgrounds
are in-game renders), CC-BY-4.0 like the other Verdant art.

## Original Omoba 2D assets

The terrain/prop atlases in `client/assets/world2d/` were generated specifically
for Omoba on 2026-07-27 through the Higgsfield MCP with Recraft V4.1, then
processed deterministically into checked-in atlases. No third-party game art
or commercial-game reference was used. The project dedicates the resulting
assets to CC0-1.0. Exact prompts, job/media identifiers, costs, source hashes,
and build records are retained in
`.agent/tasks/TASK-FULL-2D-WORLD/raw/higgsfield/`; the shipped declaration is
`client/assets/world2d/LICENSE.md`.

## Avatars / 3D models

### Paco (`client/assets/downloaded/paco.glb`)

- **Avatar:** Paco (Avatar 211)
- **Collection:** 100Avatars R3
- **Author / creator:** ToxSam (100 Avatars project)
- **Source gallery:** https://www.opensourceavatars.com/en/avatar/60176f95-a780-4e09-85ca-545314182146
- **Original model file:** https://arweave.net/0i-EEnHlcq1EZ1-sMi8DTZhesqGLqtf30WuCknfTHjA (`211_Paco.vrm`)
- **Original format:** VRM 0.x (glTF 2.0 binary)
- **License:** CC0 1.0 (public domain dedication) — no attribution legally required; credited here as good practice.
- **Modification:** none to the model data. The `.vrm` was staged as `.glb`
  (byte-identical glTF 2.0 binary container) via `scripts/convert_vrm_to_glb.py`
so Bevy's standard glTF loader selects it by file extension. The VRM-specific
extensions (`VRM`, spring bones, blendshapes) are `extensionsUsed`-only and are
  ignored by the loader.

To re-fetch and re-stage the asset:

```sh
python3 scripts/convert_vrm_to_glb.py \
    https://arweave.net/0i-EEnHlcq1EZ1-sMi8DTZhesqGLqtf30WuCknfTHjA \
    client/assets/downloaded/paco.glb
```

## Current native candidate assets — 0.18.0-rc.2

The current roster is recorded in `client/assets/avatars/manifest.json` (15
heroes) and `client/assets/bosses/manifest.json` (King Mutatio). These retain
creator, collection, source URL and declared CC0 metadata. The reviewed model
hashes and embedded-license expectations are in
`client/assets/config/asset_policy.json`; `scripts/validate_candidate_assets.py`
checks those bytes and metadata in the actual package. This inventory check
is not a substitute for resolving any newly discovered rights information.

El Bueno, Mimic Slime Classic/Water and Wendigo Hollow are **excluded** from
this candidate, including the associated previews. The old CC0 collection
labels were insufficient in light of conflicting embedded/linked permissions;
the historical evidence remains in
`docs/progress/2026-09-05-distribution-review.md`. No license metadata was
rewritten to permit their use. The earlier Paco example above describes an
optional historical import and is not part of the candidate inventory.

Both faction minions and the affected guardian now use original project-authored
geometry/materials and motion from `client/src/creatures3d.rs`.

## Original Verdant Confluence environment

`client/assets/verdant/` is derived from the project-authored Blender source in
`art/verdant-confluence/`. No external mesh or texture was used for this scene.
See `art/verdant-confluence/PROVENANCE.md` and the runtime `manifest.json` for
source hashes, derivation details, normalized walk surfaces and output hashes.
The original Verdant visual assets are licensed under CC-BY-4.0; credit Open Moba
contributors and preserve supplied individual credits. Its source scripts and
configuration remain MPL-2.0. This does not relicense imported avatars or CC0 art.
The runtime step preserves the source and is reproducible with
`python3 scripts/stage_verdant.py`.

## Retargeted actor animations

Retained imported models include Quaternius Universal Animation Library clips,
credited as CC0 in `assets-src/animations/README.md`, which records source links,
clip names and retargeting. The same CC0 library supplies the engine-owned
`client/assets/animations/humanoid-motion-v1.json`, including the distinct
`Sprint_Loop` running motion. Its source hashes and adaptations are recorded in
the asset and animation README. The native package includes that attribution record.

The skill motions of that library are Open Moba edits of the same CC0 clips:
pose keys picked, retimed, mirrored, turned or lifted by
`scripts/export_humanoid_motion.py` from the rows of
`assets-src/animations/derived-motions.json`. Each exported clip names its
source clips in `source_clip`. No further animation source and no further
licence is involved.

## Starter reaction artwork — 0.19.0-rc.7

The original AI-assisted starter reaction atlas introduced in rc.7 is recorded
separately in `client/assets/reactions/PROVENANCE.md`, with a CC0 dedication of the
project's rights in `client/assets/reactions/LICENSE.md`. It contains no imported
game characters and does not relicense any third-party cosmetic pack.

## CJK interface font — 0.19.0-rc.6

`client/assets/ui/NotoSansCJKsc-Regular.otf` is the unmodified Noto Sans CJK SC
Regular font from the official Sans2.004 release, © 2014–2021 Adobe. It is
distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The complete license is in
`client/assets/ui/NotoSansCJK-OFL.txt`; version, official source links and the
SHA-256 are recorded in `client/assets/ui/NotoSansCJK-SOURCE.md`. Preserve both
notices when packaging the font. This covers CJK player names alongside the
existing Inter font for Latin and Cyrillic interface text.

## Music and sound — 0.19.0-rc.8

The CC0 audio pack in `client/assets/audio/` includes **Exploration Theme** by
Cleyton Kauffman (https://opengameart.org/content/exploration-theme), two adapted
foley clips from **Kenney RPG Audio** (https://kenney.nl/assets/rpg-audio), and
fourteen original synthesized cues. Courtesy music credit: Cleyton Kauffman —
https://soundcloud.com/cleytonkauffman . Asset licenses, unmodified source notices,
download/member/output hashes and adaptations are recorded in that directory.
The original synthesis builder and game code remain MPL-2.0; the project's rights
in the generated clips are dedicated under CC0-1.0 as described in its LICENSE.md.
